My Two Publications

Last week an essay of mine was published on LiteraryMama, an online journal of "writing for the maternally inclined." I'm very excited, since it is my first publication since a poem of mine appeared in Highlights for Children Magazine when I was six. My poem back then:

Autumn

Lots of leaves
Falling from the trees
And sometimes a little breeze.

But the thing I like most about fall
Is the crackling noise the leaves make.

You can see how my writing has changed since then by reading my essay HERE

Thanks for sharing this! I can absolutely picture that day and those feelings. Actually, I can picture both days - the autumn one in the poem and the summer one in the essay.

Congratulations!!!

Oh! It's so beautiful and so sad at the same time. I feel honored to have a pair of pants involved in such a lovely piece (and no, they weren't homemade by me -- some colorful woman in Ghana instead).

We miss you. And indeed congratulations.

Ser, I'm so pleased for you! How wonderful! It was a lovely piece, as usual.

As you move into becoming the beloved and popular writer that you will be, I hope you can find a good editing partner too. I liked your piece at LM, but I felt they stifled your voice just a litte. Hopefully on your next published piece with them, they will let you have more freedom. You're talented and they need to let the full force of your talent shine through without any hindrances. Or maybe I was more tense reading the piece because it was in a more "serious" forum and that tenseness effected my reading? I don't know ... I just know I love your writing, your stories, your voice. Thank God for you and people like you! And thank YOU for being willing to share your talent - your stories are little gifts that are exciting to unwrap and receive!

So Yung, it is so interesting that you felt that as you read the piece. I, too, felt like it was a little different than my usual writing. I actually re-wrote the post I wrote sometime back called Neverland. I do like what I did with it, but I was trying so much to write it for LM that perhaps my voice got a bit lost. And I DID go through about four sets of revisions. Anyway, interesting observation.

Sorry to post this publically, but, of course, I have no way to get your e-mail.

I found this blog because you mentioned the poem you published in Highlights. I work at Highlights and am currently looking for folks who were published as kids who went on to have literary or artistic interests as adults (looks like you qualify!). There is an upcoming anniversary of "Your Own Pages," the section that publishes kids' work, and we'd like to celebrate it by featuring some of our former submitters (a diverse group, which includes the author of Freakomomics, some children's authors, and some bloggers like yourself) on our website.

If you think you'd be interested, please contact me at habates@highlights-corp.com or (614) 486-0631.

Even if you aren't, I'd be happy to get you an image of the original copy you appeared in.

I popped back to the site because I think I'm almost as in love with reading comments to your blogs as I am with your blogs themselves! so ... gee-willikers, Ser, that's great about Highlights finding you!

About the LM story - I fully anticipate your fan base growing rapidly from this. I'm probably also adding my own little (okay - loud) VOJ that says the corporate world tends to tone down creativity ... but maybe attributing corporate to LM is a bit much, you think? I am very excited that they included your blogspot with your story. How does the saying go? "Literary Mama today, paparazzi tomorrow."

Congratulations, Ser! It is very, very tight and well-written, and a pleasure to read. Becoming a mom does drag you into a weird realm of mom politics. I hadn't expected this at all, but now I come in from the playground sometimes feeling harassed and bedraggled by the presence of the other mothers, which sounds absurd. This article definitely captures that tension, and makes me feel like it isn't all just in my head.

Ser, I laughed throughout your most recent essay. Enough so, that Zack and Max asked me what was so funny and why I was laughing so hard. But then came the ending and I teared up. You can't put those pants in a box. They would suffocate! I know the funny parts aren't always humorous when examined or added up, but the middle of the road has potholes, too. Stay on the shoulder or cross the line or zig-zag; just be true to who you all are. It's a totally selfish wish on my part as I would suffocate if you stopped sharing all your life lessons, filled with grace and humor and compassion.
I love the Highlights connection. That is so wonderful. I hope you frame it and display it prominently. I know I would!
