Handiwork

Sometimes I get really depressed when I look at crafty, creative, design-oriented blogs because I don't have much of an eye for home design and I'm not exactly what I would call crafty. Also, I have a horrible camera and no photography skills whatsoever, so anything I take a picture of looks kind of awful anyway. Nevertheless, I do not think I am devoid of artistic skill, as the above examples prove.

I might be the proudest of the first: Craig in a spiffy outfit. I shopped for this ensemble and helped him get dressed for a job interview a few weeks ago. This is the second time that Craig has worn a tie since I have known him. The other was at our wedding.

The second picture is of a dragon that Luke and I made from something called "model magic." It is a foamy, air-drying substance that is easy to work with.

Then there is Henry's cardboard house. He made it with a little help from me, but he painted it all by himself. Together we made the little creatures inside out of model magic and homemade salt dough. The creatures are a little hard to see, but there are a couple of penguins, some snowmen, a ladybug, and a "rainbow eggsnake."

Finally, we have the snowman that I helped the boys build a few weeks ago. I think he was pretty cute. Also, we woke up one morning to find that someone had added some penny buttons down the front, which was a little bit magical.

So there you have it! Proof that I am crafty. Now if I could just take gorgeous photos.

I love the little dragon and your playdoh household. Snowmen are fun at any age :-D. The pennies appearing was like winter magic, how fun.

OMG - Craig looks like a Prof and not a grad student!!! I think the greying sides might have something to do with it. And of course, the terrific ensemble pushes him over the edge to downright dapper. I love that he posed for your blog - or at least it appears that way. What a supportive group of folks you are.

I don't know about craftsy, but you definitely are creative. More importantly, you DO things ... you run marathons, you bake, you make your own soak and cook your own refried beans, you write ... and the list goes on. I think it's much more important that you do things no matter what level of the perceived ability and that you do these things with your sons. I was just thinking on the drive to work some things I'd like to try, but I have no idea how to go about starting them. You know how and you're teaching your sons this important skill.

Wait, is that a VELVET jacket Craig has on?

Oh, how funny. The jacket does look like velvet in the photo. It is corderoy, actually, but kind of a shiny one.

I didn't exactly tell Craig I would be posting this photo on the blog. But he's got to know all the photos are fair game, right?

fisher and henry should get their cardboard hoses together. i love the rainbow eggsnake. :D

I can't wait to hear how the job interview goes! How could he fail to get it looking that professional? :) And the dragon is just awesome. Don't forget that food is also a creative act, and you are definitely a good cook. Thanks for sharing photos!

I must say, where does cooking come in? You are a wonderful, creative cook with artistic flair, don't you think? I certainly think so...
But maybe I am just comparing you to me.

Ser,

I love these photos. You are very creative. And your kids are so blessed because you actually take on these projects with them!

I had to make a daisy costume for Anna while we were all sick with the flu. I was a very grumpy, grumpy camper, and Anna kept saying, "This does not look right at all!" I kept wanting to throw the petals at her and say, "Well then, do it yourself!"

Anyway, let's talk soon. We can exchange notes from our deathbeds. I'm sure we have the same flu, and if we were still in Hyde Park, we could could get together in our pajamas and moan about our ailments.

Just be glad you don't have a puppy. It's kind a deal-breaker when you're trying to take care of two kids and a sick husband from your deathbed.

Jenny, I've heard that things are much more difficult to accomplish from the deathbed. It's nice to have a personal anecdote to confirm the general wisdom. I'll try to not climb in anytime soon.

p.s. hope you both feel much better very soon.

I LOVE this blog post!!!! More like this, please.

What are you saying, anonymous? You don't like posts about eating disorders, depression, and sessions with the psychologist? I hear ya. I have just been thinking that I need to lighten it up around here a bit.

Yes, but it helps sort things out when you write them and share them. I love all your blogs.

I have to say when I think of you "UN'-creative does not come to mind - ever! You're a great mom, a great sister (from what I can tell) and a great friend.

Are you buttered up yet? I was thinking that dragon was awesome and he'd look great on top of a jar of bean dip that we could sell at the market... Just a thought....

All Craig needs is a pipe and he's good to go. Not that he'd actually smoke it, but he looks dashing in that coat! Great job on the shopping, Ser!

You know what? I'm the same way - creative but not crafty and I would LOVE to be the sort of person who could sit down with something and half an hour later TA DA! I've made beautiful... something.
Lovely post!
