A New Month! New Money!

Aah, I survived another month on the cash budget. Yes, I did cash some checks for a bit of extra money last week--thanks for the day of swimming and the book fair treats, Grandma Jane!--but I tell you, we are really saving money. I have become very aware of the fact that I was recreationally and impulsively spending. I realize this now because there are days when I'm bored and I want to go to Target. I crave it. And since I don't have the cash, I don't go. Or I go but I will only take a small bit of cash with me.

Remember how I said that I wasn't buying vanilla? Something about that must have hit the sympathy chord right on the head--holy mixed metaphor, former English major!--because within one week I received two lovely bottles of vanilla in the mail and a check with "vanilla and spoiling the boys" written in the memo line. Thank you for the vanilla, Yellow Fever. Luke and Silas's godmother asked specifically to be referred to by her roller derby name in any mention of this gift. And thank you, Grandma Jane. I don't need the vanilla now, but spoiling the boys has been fun. The swimming was great. The books are fabulous. And they will really enjoy the milk that I can buy them now.

Joking. Please don't send us milk.

can I ask what you do to fend off the boredom instead of going to Target?

What a great question, Christy! It has been a hard adjustment, as silly as that sounds. I have gone "bargain hunting" at Target a few times. I'll take $20, for instance, and need to buy toilet paper, and the rest I can spend on anything I want. Or I'll go thrifting. I've also been making more complicated things in the kitchen (not fun for some, but I like it.) I've been researching free stuff to do with the kids, like storytimes, an indoor park at a nearby rec center, etc. And now that the weather is nice, we've been spending more time playing outside, and that helps.

Ser,

I am sure you know about this website, but it lists a lot of great blogs and they all have to do with Columbus!

Good job on the money saving. I really need to start that. SOON!

That's awesome - that's real discipline staying on a cash budget and it's great you're saving money! I love that photo of the vanilla extract - so bright and sunny - you'll have to let us know what you make with it!

Have you thought about doing more photography. This photo is great! Makes me want to buy that vanilla.

Mara, I do know about that website, but thanks! It is a good one. Whoever complimented my photo, thanks! I'm generally a horrible photographer but I've been trying.

I love a memo line that reads "vanilla and spoiling the boys"!

I've never done the bored shopping thing. But I do love checking out the end-cap clearances when I'm there. You must try the Shea Moisture volumizing shampoo and conditioner sometime when you have a little extra. Your hair will love you!

I only started doing more shopping like that once I had kids. I'm not sure why exactly--probably because you can shop at Target with kids and you are always there for diapers or something. I will try that shampoo, SY, when I get the chance. I remember you mentioning it somewhere else, too.
