Relic

Luke lost his first tooth last night. He pulled it out himself, blood and all. For him, this was amazing, since he has been known to go nearly hysterical over the sight of blood. He was so excited, and it seemed to be less about the money that he was hoping to find under his pillow and more about the coming-of-age significance of losing the tooth. He was proud.

And when I held that tooth in my hand, I couldn’t believe how tiny it was, so insubstantial, a small speck in my palm. The relic of my firstborn’s babyhood.

I'm assuming that last comment is a "save the tooth" comment and not a "save it for someone who cares" comment. It is anonymous, though. :)

You are all so kind to me, as usual. Thanks for linking to me at Kirtsy, Amy!

A lovely story, but wait! I heard that the tooth fairy in Ohio gives out Lego Mars Mission kits. My increasingly-toothless child wants to move there.

Pulling it out is not so bad. Mine refuses to pull them out and they hang there, wiggling in a most disgusting manner. The last one he swallowed in a banana sandwich because he wouldn't allow it to be pulled out. On the other hand, we had an interesting discussion about the fate of calcium in your intestinal tract.

Do you remember than line from Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up? When Mrs. Darling meets him: "...somehow she knew at once that he was Peter Pan...He was a lovely boy,...but the most entrancing thing about him was that he had all his first teeth. When he saw she was a grown-up, he gnashed the little pearls at her."

It was from me, Ser. The mom who has a jewelry box full of little teeth. Tell Luke congratulations. It is quite a rite of passage for his age group. Love, Mom
