Another Post About Barfing

So the barfing got bad. Really bad. I think I threw up five times on Monday. This is far worse than when I was pregnant with either Luke or Henry. This could mean any number of things: I’m having a girl, for instance, or I’m having twins. The first is my favorite option of the two, but both are preferable to any number of awful, awful things that serious morning sickness can indicate and that Dr. Google so cheerfully describes in detail. Or maybe I’m just getting old and I don’t do pregnancy as well as I used to—not that this was ever very well, mind you.

So yesterday I went to a local midwife/OB clinic for a first visit and got a prescription for Zofran. This is extremely expensive and my insurance will only cover 21 pills for 30 days when really, that is only enough for seven days—ten if I try to stretch out the dosing. Oh, and it causes immediate and extreme constipation. But so far, it seems to be working pretty well. I’m still nauseous now and then, but it is far more manageable. And I’m not throwing up, so that's something.

Ugh, Ser. Just...ugh. I'm glad the medicine is helping stop the vomiting, even with its unpleasant side effects. Maybe take some Colace at night? It was my best friend when I was expecting Eva.

Here's hoping that this does not mean twins, and also hoping you get some relief. I wish I had a list I once saw on a t-shirt of all the different expressions for puke, upchuck, throw chunks, toss cookies, worship the porcelain god...

On the plus side, you're glowing! Seriously, you look fabulous. I can't remember what I took with Ellie (probably the same stuff by a different name) but it never really took away the nausea, just the vomiting. Just think in less than 9 months it will all be over and then you'll have the twins, Scratch and Rosie (this is meant to be funny, I mean no disrespect...)

What fodder for the blog! Of course, you won't be able to write about it till you start feeling a little better-it will make you sick just thinking about it. I am so glad the medicine is helping. And that the twins, Scratch and Rosie are so robust that they are getting all the nutrients they need from YOU. :) (You know you will survive-even if it doesn't feel like it now.) :) (You will be feeling better each day before you know it.) And, I think you do pregnancy beautifully, gracefully and so like the strong woman that you are. (of course I've never gotten to be around you much during any of them, but I just know you.) Hang in there. I love you and wish I could bring you some chicken and rice soup. :)

Hi Ser,

I am so sorry! This sounds utterly terrible. You should see if your insurance company will cover you for more pills if you get the generic version of zofran. It is called 'ondansetron'. I got it recently for my surgery and if I remember correctly it was less than $4 a pill. My insurance company did not cover it at all, so it was worth it for me to pay out of pocket for a few bills. But my insurance company is nothing to scream about, so maybe yours will cover more bills, without any cost to you. Just a thought. Hope this passes soon.

Severe morning sickness also is linked to having more intelligent children...

I had to google the morning sickness = intelligent child ... and here's what I found!

Another example where the old adage "No Pain, No Gain" applies.

Yea morning sickness!

or "no sick, not quick"? (as in quick-witted ... obviously, my biological mother did not throw up even once while carrying me ... sniff) or "throw-up for better grow-up"?

Ya, a paper here in Toronto ran a front-page story about how pregnant women who throw up have smarter kids...

Ser,

Praying for you. Can you imagine Luke introducing the twins on the playground, "This one is Rosie, and this one, is...Scratch."

Anyway, I still feel like it is just one girl, and that she will be a joy. But I can't get over how amused I am by Luke's suggested name.

My morning sickness got worse with EACH pregnancy. By the time I was pregnant with The Baby, I was throwing up over and over and over again, often without WARNING!
It passed. (and I DO think morning sickness is worse with baby girls. But I am an old wife.)
